With careful craftmanship Crowley pulls off quite the literary feat. But let's leave all of that external criticism behind and look at the actual text itself. In many ways I see Little, Big as this effort to build a new European mythos where the previous indigenous one is unknown through wilful ignorance and unserving through lack of understanding. I think Crowley deliberately avoided native American myth because there's no way his story could have sat next to it or been justified in its presence. The native American myths, stories and connection to country were decimated over centuries and they provide a rich tapestry not just of folklore but of knowledge on how to live on American soil from shore to shining shore. It brutally suppressed and destroyed them over a few hundred years and in some places they hang on by a few spindly threads. The thing is, America already has dozens of mythologies. He created a compelling and fascinating work but one that feels incredibly constipated and rather vacuous. I mention this because I got the sense that John Crowley was attempting the same feat for America with Little, Big. An exceptionally lofty goal and frankly one he wasn't far off achieving. When asked about the genesis for Lord of the Rings, Tolkien often talked of the desire to write a new English mythology.

I had a warrior-like attitude and got out of bed in the morning thinking about how the ways I could make this day my bitch. After all, I had been through so many hard things in my (short) life, but I still didn't let them put me down. I considered depression as a "fake" disease and I thought people who said they were depressed just lacked the strength to bootstrap themselves and solve the shit in their lives that made them unhappy. When I was younger (think teenager up to my early twenties) I thought being unhappy was ridiculous. Explain why happiness is such a fascinating topic to me. Before I dive right into the book, I feel like I need to tell a little back-story here. Happiness is definitely a theme here, and there's a reason for that. I say it's on-brand, because this month's read, Furiously Happy, is about living with mental illness, most specifically depression. Basically, how to be happy with your option B. If you haven't read it yet (which you can do here), that book was about how to find happiness again after a tragic event. It's kind of on-theme, because last month, I reviewed Option B, by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant. Phew! This month, I'm talking about Furiously Happy, by Jenny Lawson. Hey guys, happy Tuesday and welcome to my second ever book review on The Hungarian Brunette. Red, White, And Royal Blue – Casey McQuiston Love is love in any form, and true fans of the romance genre will tell you that gay romance novels are just as beautiful as any romance novel including a man and a woman. How do I begin, I loved this book! Everything was done so well in this book, and I have never felt so seen. So why are they being targeted? What secrets are being threatened to be revealed? The adaptation looks stunning, has lovely music and is well acted, but the underdeveloped plot changes and the many deviations from the book undermine it. The book isn't Agatha Christie's best overall, I much preferred Death On the Nile, Murder in Mesopotamia, Sleeping Murder, And Then There Were None and Murder of Roger Ackroyd, but it was beautifully crafted and does keep you guessing to the last minute. The second question I asked myself was did I prefer the book or the adaptation? For me, the book. The Peter Ustinov version was good on its own merits, but I did think it was the weakest of the Poirot films that Ustinov did, lacking the grandeur of Death On the Nile and Evil Under The Sun. One was which version did I prefer, the Peter Ustinov version or this? This is the easier to answer of the two, although it is more unfaithful to the book, in terms of visuals, music and acting I do prefer this. While I was watching this version of Appointment With Death, I asked myself two questions. However, there are also serious ideas to be found in Lysistrata’s speeches. The idea that Lysistrata could unite women to end the war would have set up the audience for a traditional battle between the sexes. At the time of the play’s initial production, Athens and Sparta had been at war for twenty years, and this play would have offered one of the few opportunities to laugh at war. Comedies were very popular presentations during the Greek festivals, and there is no reason to think that Lysistrata was not immensely popular. Modern audiences enjoy the sexuality and humor in Aristophanes’ work, and they enjoy what appears as modern feminism and the depiction of strong women. Lysistrata is often produced in contemporary theatre. The emperor summons the new pilot and his dragon to the Far East, a long voyage fraught with peril and intrigue.
